The Savage is brought in from outside of the utopian society by Bernard as an experiment. He faces civilized society with a bright outlook, but eventually comes to hate it bitterly. Lenina, the supporting role of the novel, is the most pronounced example of the ideal citizen. She adheres to the principles of the society without so much as a second thought. In the utopian society that Huxley presents, everyone is happy. There are no differences. Everyone is brought up to be happy, and most do not even know what sadness or anger is. All is cured artificially through surrogates or drugs. Even happiness alone is not unique to the individual. Soma, the hallucinatory drug, the perfect drug that is used by all, even induces the same kind of happiness. Our society has gone from the average telegraph and postal service to the World Wide Web and Smart Phones. Adding these new communications into an everyday business role has created a highway for expansion and success for business around the world. Although my business does not benefit from much of this as we are off the grid I do see some things that are influenced by the worldly communications. Well working in a little general store 10 years ago was challenging when it came to hunting and fishing seasons. You would have this terrible process of filling out a large inquisitive paper in order for the customer to receive their license. You would have to look up different codes in a book to fill in and call the National Forest Service Databank to see who drew what tag. It was a time consuming, annoying ordeal for the customers who were waiting in line and the clerk doing all the work. Now there is an internet service that is installed at our location by National Wildlife Fish and Game that is equipped with a training course and takes roughly 10 minutes as every one that is entered into the system is saved for future tags and licenses. So there are no more headaches. This form of communication really has changed our business for the better as people don’t dread getting their tags and licenses. Fish and Game benefit as more people are getting their tags and licenses for fun rather than just the avid hunters and fisherman. I find that there is a lot of oral business communication at my job. As the manager and bosses run out the door they are yelling to do’s for me to accomplish throughout the day. Oral communication is fine with me, I can interpret the urgency of the to do’s and prioritize as they are giving me instruction. I also can ask questions to confirm what I am doing is correct. With written communication there are several things in this business that can go wrong. I may not understand the note correctly and may need to ask questions, but with the higher ups gone there is really nothing you can do. We often speak with delivery people over the phone as we cannot order most things online. We also have to drive 40 to 60 miles to pick up deliveries because we are so far in the woods the companies refuse to bring the goods up to us so we cannot go through the products while the delivery guys are still there is there is a problem we have to address it after the fact. The few things we do order online are the chips and cookies. â€Å"There is an efficiency doing it this way that there is not with the other distributors. † (Cronic, 2011)We never seem to have a messed up order and they are always good quality. The trends of the business communication that I have experienced are more in the electronic form. In the past we have used electronic equipment and devices to do ordering. You scan a barcode and enter the amount and there you have it the order is automatically transmitted to the company for distribution. I also have seen in the past companies have an email trend. There are several ways to communicate but not a whole lot of time so email is the easiest way for communication. The people at my previous company sometimes wouldn’t see each other for months but worked in the same facility just different buildings. It became too time consuming to walk across the street to discuss an issue. It was just easier to email and not deal with the emotion my supervisor said. It was robotic and non-confrontational. I believe that using just email to communicate was really a bad idea. If people interact and show passion it boosts moral but to purposely email to avoid confrontation and emotion can hinder work ethic and productivity. This also made me feel my supervisor was a chicken and had no back bone. He was working with the product and knew the problems that needed to be addressed but chose to be the yes man and not talk about the problems and quality of the product. This message is a business killer in my opinion. Using oral communication seems to initiate an employer and employee bond. By communicating in person with emotion you can learn to respect the passion shown in different instructions given. By knowing your employee or employer on a personal but non evasive manner it is easier to keep the moral up and feel a part of a business. Work ethic will improve and moral will increase. The message oral communication sends is that we are a team and this is what I need to make it happen. With written communication there are the good for example; you rear is covered when looking at a discipline aspect. The bad is that again it is very impressionable and if there is a question, more than likely it cannot be answered immediately creating a lag in the timeframe for accomplishment. The message that is sent is here is your job don’t bug me just get it done. This impersonal point can cause confusion and lack of moral. There are so many different businesses and ways to communicate in this world today that it is seems depending on the company type different types of communication work better than others. I am old fashioned and chose to be a clerk up in the woods despite having a college education because I prefer oral communication. I like to see emotion and see customers happy. I like being a part of a team and being shown respect and giving respect in person rather than using emotion cons or a LOL. This is my trend and what I am comfortable with as a person. Policy making in the field of criminal justice is extremely vital to society. Punishments can be very confusing in the fact of what is appropriate. What is too much and what is too little? There have been many studies that show that there is little or no deterrent of crime such as armed robbery when the punishment is a long sentence to prison. The reason for this lack of deterrent is because the person who is committing the crime or crimes knows what is at stake, yet he or she chooses to commit the robbery anyway. This is because the gains of that robbery outweigh the prison sentence. The main purpose of this bill is to stop or at least lessen the amount of armed robbery that is being committed by putting those who commit the crime behind bars for a longer period of time. This seems like a good idea at first glance. However there is more to this proposition. Lengthening the prison sentence is being used as a deterrent or to simply take the bad guys off the street for longer. This has not worked in the past and will not work now. Facing a long sentence has not deterred robbery from happening. If prison sentencing was enough robbery would not be around in society especially not as frequent as it is today. According to a study done by the FBI in 2006 447,403 robberies were reported to the police, which equals out to a rate of one robbery per minute in the United States (McGoey, 2014). The punishment for robbery can be up to 25 years in the United States. Doubling that and making the sentence 50 years will hardly make any change in the robbery rate. If anything it would just cause the jails and prisons to  become overpopulated quicker, costing taxpayers more money. There are more effective ways to address a crime than make the punishments more intense or longer. The classic school of criminology is what I base my recommendation on. In the late 1700’s, which are the time that the classical school came about, the punishment for crimes was extremely cruel and would be seen today as barbaric. Cesare de Beccaria and Jeremy Bentham played a tremendous role in the theory of criminology and criminal justice today would not be where it is without them. Their main focus was to lessen the harsh punishments implemented by the judicial system at the time (Schmalleger, 2012). Cesare de Baccaria believed that preventing crimes would benefit a society more than punishing someone who committed a crime. This belief was the driving force of the classic school of criminology. He believed the punishment should fit the crime for instance theft should be punished through the use of fines and crimes that cause personal injury to be punished by corporal punishment. This would, in turn he believed, prevent these crimes from happening. Jeremy Bentham viewed crime a little differently than Beccaria. Bentham was viewed as a utilitarian. He believed that the punishment for any crime must be that of the greater good for the community. Basically stating that any pain being used as a punishment towards an offender must be justified to benefit the good of the society. Modern criminal justice still holds its foundation in that of the classic school of criminology. Having said that, long prison sentences do act as a major deterrent for many criminals, but poses a major conflict of ideas to that of the classic school of thought due to the fact that crimes are committed based on free will and rational thinking. many factors such as emotional instability in s sudden moment, and mental and physical disorders that a longer prison sentence simply would not abolish. There is also the very likely chance that drugs and or alcohol is involved.  If the offender is being driven by an addiction nothing, surely not a longer prison sentence is going to persuade his or her decision (Schmalleger, 2012) With all of that being said, the answer to decreasing crime, more specifically armed robbery, a longer prison sentence is not the answer. The question at hand is: what is the answer? This is a question that is going to be debated as long as crime is resent in the population. Juvenile criminals usually mature into adult criminals, so perhaps putting more criminal emphasis on juvenile crime must be done. In addition to everything, it is well known that drugs are the foundation of many crimes. Drugs are responsible for many thefts and robberies, and more time behind bars is not going to make a drug addict think twice before robbing someone. The Haredim are a Jewish sect that is basically a sub-group of traditional Jews that demonstrate many differences from the majority. Haredim have a different approach to death and the actual funeral procession of loved ones. Many other cultures will honor their dead by having a eulogy or some other type of ceremony. The Haredim like to invoke a different sense of devotion to passing ancestors. For instance, it is acceptable, among Haredim, for the Sephardi to sing the songs of his father and grandfather, to utilize the prayer rhythm of his youth. 1 This is essentially singing prayer songs to the father, if passed, and the grandfather, if passed during a funeral procession. These songs are supposed to honor the dead and at the same time elevate the dead to a type of saint-like status. After the deceased have had songs sung, it is time for a type of ceremony called the â€Å"Communion of Saints. † Here the Haredim invoke the â€Å"Communion of Saints† upon hearing of the death of an elder and attempt to have the Saints bless the body spiritually. The blessing is done to elevate his familiar saints and holy men, entering [his relative] in the pantheon of the believer, even to add a modest twist or two of traditional clothing to the standard garb. 1 The Haredim are known for their revering of elders upon death and their attempt at ascending those elders into a higher spiritual space. This is firmly established, according to their faith, by invoking the elder and finally invoking the â€Å"Communion of Saints† to assist in the transfer to the spirit world. Another aspect of death in Haredim society is the actual burial. The Haredim employ the hevra kaddisha, the Communal Fraternal Burial Society in Israel, is responsible for the reverential disposal of the dead in accordance with Jewish law for all Jewish citizens. 2 Once the arrangements are established by the hevra kaddisha, the burial must take place. A problem arises in the burial because it must occur as soon as possible. As the Jewish text suggests, The dead must be buried as soon as possible, as much out of respect for their corporeal integrity as out of concern that they should not pollute their environment. Texts devoted to establishing and commenting on the impurity of human remains are abundant, and the laws relating to this subject are very strict: people and utensils that have been in contact with a cadaver might become impure, as does the place where they have lain, thus being in the presence of a dead body can cause ritual uncleanness. 3 It is clear that the Haredim employed different rituals from other groups, but also maintained a bastion of traditional beliefs that secular Jews also follow. Haredim are a very distinct culture as compared to other sects of Judaism. One of the more shocking revelations about their culture is they actually do not support the established state of Israel. One of the first evidences of this non-support is how the Haredim view the chief rabbis in Israel. They do not recognize the Chief Rabbinate and have their own Rabbinic authorities. 4 This presents a problem in the Israeli Jewish community in particular. The Israelis are attempting to create a united front against other groups that oppose them in the region. Because of the lack of support, and since there is no doctrinal significance to the office of Chief Rabbi, voices are raised from time to time to abolish the whole institution of two Chief Rabbis, irreverently called by Israelis the Heavenly Twins. 5 Another way they reject the Israeli state is they look upon Israel as too secular. All the Haredim have in common a â€Å"total dedication to the Torah in its traditional form and believe that the secular world is best kept at arms length. 6 They have a stark rejection of Israel and do not actually need a Jewish state. They are fine the way they are and reject the secularism of the Jewish faith in general. The politicians in Israel have no impressed the Haredim throughout the years. They believe they are without structure and without promise for any group of people. One example is from the 1981 campaign [where] the two parties [created] satirical television commercials, which featured well-known Israeli comedians. Such commercials, according to the Haredim, were an expression of spiritual emptiness. 7 The Haredim stand firm behind their beliefs even against their own government. A final examination of the Haredim reveals some peculiar traits as compared to other cultures. One of the ways they are different from other Jewish sects is their devotion to a culture long gone. For instance, they continued to be known by the Yiddish names of their rebes towns — Satmar, Belz, Ger — places that existed no more. 8 Another distinct difference is in the attire that the Haredim men usually wear. One eyewitness recounted, the men wore the clothing of eighteenth-century Hasidim. 7 One of the remarkable characteristics of the religion is the offspring that are produced within the families. Some of the families have many children as compared to other groups. It actually makes sense why this occurs because, they produced large families — six, eight, even ten children — to begin to try to make up for the millions of murdered Jews. 9 The Haredim do portray some peculiar traits that may seem strange to other religions, but actually they are effectively helping their way of life live on in the future. Radical Reconstruction Immediately following the Civil War the actions of Radical Republicans led to many changes in the South. Leading the way to Radical Reconstruction was Congressmen Charles Sumner and Thadeus Stevens. Their were many goals and motives the Radicals hoped to obtain. The first and main goal of the Radicals was to punish the South. The Radicals also hoped to retain Republican power by taking advantage of the South any way they could. Going along with taking advantage of the South, the Radicals wanted to protect industrial growth in the North and benefit economically from the situation. Another very important goal of the radicals was to aid the freed slaves. Equality for blacks was a hope the Radicals hoped to obtain, but it was also an effective way to retain Republican power. If the Radicals help Blacks, then Blacks will become Republican, thus increasing republican power. Using Legislature, the Radicals hoped to acquire all these things. The first victory for the Radicals was the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. One of the main obstacles the Radicals came across was the opposition by Andrew Jackson. Jackson immediately vetoed the Civil Rights Act as soon as he could. But the Radicals held most of the power in Congress and overrode his veto. Due to Johnson's resistance, Congress took it a step further and then passed the 14th Amendment.
